7: Vocal Health

The best way to tune in to your instrument (voice) is to know what the different indicators are that we need respond to.

Our voices are affected by our health, our thoughts, our emotions, our sleep, the weather, and sometimes even our diet.

Stay with the process as you’re going through these exercises. Don’t be discouraged if you feel as though you plateau in your progress - there is always greater breakthrough coming.

Some tips to remember:

  • Posture/Stance
  • Exercise - blood flow affects your voice
  • Muscle control
  • Water - drink half your bodyweight in ounces
  • Sleep
  • Warm water with apple cider vinegar is great way to kill any bacteria if you feel a cold coming on
  • Humidifiers are great to have in your room
  • Pick a water bottle you love - you will drink more water!
  • Don’t skip meals
  • Assess how caffeine affects you personally
  • Eat a protein based meal before you have to sing, not something carb-heavy
  • Overuse
  • Be aware of your speaking voice. Many of these points also correlate to your speaking voice
  • Make sure you’re not in environments where you’re competing vocal all the time - eliminate strain on your voice

Spend at least 15 minutes a day on the vocal exercises Kiley has previously detailed to get the most out of your voice and see progress.
