“When we choose to stop and rest we are honoring the image of God in us.”

The Power of Rest

The word rest means: cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength.

  1. Rest is how we sustain revival

    1. Burnout happens when our doing exceeds our being.

    2. Great leaders know how to rest.

    3. Psalm 103 - A recipe for becoming a great worship leader. David is leading his own heart into worship.

  2. Psalm 103 - “Barak”

    1. Barak - praise - means to kneel and bow low

    2. When you bow your head down to the ground your heart rises over your head

    3. “Worship is a position of the heart before God.”

    4. The first time “Barak” is used in scripture is in Genesis.

      1. God kneels down in the dirt and he forms a man, he kisses the clay and Adam comes to life.

      2. In God’s eyes, Adam saw who He was.

      3. Everything in creation is echoing the dependence, of breathing in the breath of God and breathing it back out into the earth.

      4. “You were made to be dependent.”

      5. “God blessed (barak) them, be fruitful and increase in number…”

        1. “Worship is giving back to God what he first gave to us.”

        2. “He first blessed them and then he commissioned them. If we do that the other way that's when we burn out.”

  1. Father’s heart for the Sabbath - Make rest a priority

    1. God adored Adam and he hadn’t done anything yet.

    2. After God created Adam and Eve he took the day off. He took the time off for connection. The Sabbath.

      1. The pharisees made this day super religious

      2. Sabbath came before sin. It is not an option it is a command, and it is meant for fun and connection with Father God.

      3. This is God’s way of doing family.

    3. The other six days Adam was to rule and reign and take care of the earth.

    4. God begins Adam’s week with rest. He would receive first.

    5. “When we choose to stop and rest we are honoring the image of God in us.”

    6. “Sabbath is our re-creating the Garden…” - Dan B Allender

  1. “If you went to heaven and God said, you can go back, what’s the one thing you would want to do?”

    1. Jesus came back and served his disciples around a campfire at the beach.

    2. Jesus came back to be with his friends.

    3. Before Jesus says to Peter “Go and feed my sheep” Jesus feeds Peter.

      1. Before he asks them to go preach the gospel Jesus washes their feet.

  2. Ministry from the Overflow

    1. Matthew Chapter 3 - “This is my son in whom I am well pleased”

    2. Father God says he is well pleased BEFORE Jesus did ANY miracles.

      1. Everything that Jesus did in the next three years of ministry came from the overflow.

      2. Jesus instantly is lead by the spirit into the wilderness after this encounter. He is submitting to His Father’s leadership.

      3. “The ultimate test is that of worship.”

    3. Jesus offers us rest - come to me all you who are burdened and I will give you rest. My yoke is easy and my burden is light.
